About Our Adventure

We are a group of recent college graduates who took teaching jobs through a program in rural Southwestern Alaska. There are seven of us spread over five towns in Alaska. We flew in from all over the US: North Carolina, Washington state, Georgia, and Hawaii to work these jobs. We are employed by the Dillingham and Southwest School Districts and will be working as interventionists for the next four months. The first two days of our trip were spent traveling: me and two other colleagues hopped on a plane in Raleigh, NC and flew to Seattle, WA. From there, we spent another four hours on a plane to Anchorage, AK. By the time we made it through the Covid test line and got to the hotel, we didn't go to bed until about 6 am Eastern time; I was up for a total of 22 hours. Once we got 4 or 5 hours of sleep, we headed out again and got on a smaller plane to fly to Dillingham, AK. Since there were so few people headed to Dillingham, the plane first stopped in King Salmon to let a few people off before heading on. The flight was beautiful! Out the window we could see mountains, lakes, and lots and lots of snow. At the airport, we were picked up by the heads of our program. It was chilly, in the 20s with a wind chill of about 20! (This means it can feel more like 5 or 10 degrees - especially if the wind is coming from the North ). The whole road was covered in ice and we soon learned that this is just how it is in Alaska! All roads we've driven on so far are covered in at least an inch or two or more of straight ice. Although we are adjusting to the time change and cold temperatures, we are so ready for this journey and we are glad you can follow along with us! Enjoy!
